Based in Vollenhove, the Netherlands, Royal Huisman specialises in the construction of sailing and superyachts ranging from 30 to 90 metres in length. Using a range of materials, from aluminium to steel and advanced composite, Royal Huisman successfully combines traditional maritime craftsmanship with state-of-the-art engineering solutions.
Founded in 1884 by Jan Jans Huisman, the shipyard first started out as a modest operation building wooden workboats and fishing vessels in Ronduite. The shipyard went on to pioneer steel construction in 1954 under Jan Huisman’s leadership, whilst his son Wolter oversaw the yard’s transition to aluminium hulls in 1964. A key moment in the shipyard’s history took place in 1984 when the former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands bestowed the “Royal” designation upon the shipyard’s centenary, recognising a century of exceptional quality and excellence. The yard launched its specialist mast and rigging division, Rondal, in 1975, further cementing its reputation. Today, under fourth-generation family ownership led by Alice Huisman, Royal Huisman maintains its position, consistently earning multiple awards and global recognition. Outside of new construction, the shipyard operates Huisfit, its dedicated refit division. The shipyard’s current global fleet features numerous award-winning projects such as the 59.7-metre sailing yacht Sarissa, which claimed “Sailing Yacht of the Year” at the 2024 World Superyacht Awards and the groundbreaking 52-metre motor yacht Special One, the world’s largest sportfish yacht, which won the 2025 Judges’ Special Award at The World Superyacht Awards for its unique design and concept, and the Best Naval Architecture award at the BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards. Other notable launches include the iconic 90-metre schooner Athena, delivered in 2004, and the environmentally conscious 58-metre Ethereal.
